Kiosk Migration Guide

Guides to migrate your kiosk from one PC/Kiosk to another PC/Kiosk

Migrating installs between kiosks/PCs

Make sure to backup everything before proceeding and note your registry settings.

Note that some options may not be required if you're simply doing a fresh Windows install while retaining kiosk data. 

Backup Required Files (Original PC/Kiosk)

  • Backup the following files:
    • haldata.vdb3
    • hal.xml
    • inventory.data
    • profile.data
    • system.config
    • Redbox.Rental.Services.dll
  • Export registry key:
    • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Redbox\REDS\Kiosk Engine\Store

(Optional) Change Kiosk ID

  • Edit KioskID and market in the above registry key
  • Reference KioskIDs and addresses from profile.data > Store table
  • Update system.config, replacing all old Kiosk ID values with the new one

Prepare New Kiosk

  • Install a fresh kiosk image on the new PC
    • Alternatively, you can do a fresh Windows install and perform a Store install. Use the appropriate installer for your OS, as well as a recent data.zip.
  • Replace the same files with the backed-up ones
  • Install the registry key
    • If you're migrating from 32-bit to 64-bit, you may need to edit the .reg file to have a different path. Check regedit before installing the key to see if Redbox's registry keys are installed in a WOW6432Node folder. If so, you'll need to adjust the paths within the registry key to reflect this.

Configure COM Ports

  • Open Device Manager
  • Assign COM ports to match the old setup:
    • RS232 Port (Serial) → COM1
    • Protenus board → COM3
    • Ingenico Card Reader → COM5

Install in Kiosk

  • Shut down the PC
  • Mount it into the kiosk hardware
  • Power on system
  • Confirm KioskEngine loads

Camera Driver Setup (if not same kiosk)

  • Open Device Manager → Camera Devices
  • If Microsoft default driver is installed, replace it
  • Install AVEO x64 (4th Gen) drivers (from Discord)
  • Open HAL Tester → Configure Devices → Survey Hardware
  • Verify camera detection (compare with screenshot from old kiosk)

Camera Calibration (if not same kiosk)

  • Open HAL Tester
  • Insert a disc into the gripper (aligned with camera)
  • Open Camera Settings → Preview
  • Adjust settings until image is clear and readable
    • Example: lower Gamma for clarity
